1227 wird Schloß Hörtenberg erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Um 1300 herum war die heutige Ruine Hörtenberg als Gerichtsstand über eine große Region herrschend. Hörtenberg wurde vom Graf Meinrad II. von Tirol von der früheren Lehnschaft der Grafen von Eschenlohe gekauft und ging somit als Einverleibung endgültig nach Tirol.
Am 5. August 1706 entzündete ein einschlagender Blitz den dort lagernden Pulvervorrat von rund 1500 Zentnern, und das Schloß flog in die Luft. Übrig blieb nur der noch bestehende Burgfried, der heute zum Schutz vor weiterem Verfall mit einem Dach versehen ist.
Heute noch erhalten sind der interessante Bergfried mit wenig regelmäßigen Steinlagen, erneuerten Eingängen und Zinnen sowie Reste der Ringmauern und eines Brunnenschachtes. Der größte Teil der Burg wurde durch eine Pulverexplosion 1706 zerstört.
Das Gemeindewappen von Pfaffenhofen zeigt eine rote zinnenbekrönte Mauer als Symbol für die frühere Burg Hörtenberg, von der nur noch der Burgfried übrig ist. Der schwarze Dreizack entstammt dem Wappen einer der ersten Richterfamilien, die hier Recht sprachen.
