Universityies have been bringing students to study Devil's Lake since the mid-1800's/ In the 1920's the University of Wisconsin started a summer survey camp at Devil's Lake. The camp was located on the Messenger family's property, who ran a local hotel on the southwest shore until 1911. The Messenger's barn became the camp's classroom, which was called Owen Hall. The camp was closed in 1956.
