The Outdoor Campus at Sertoma Park places a major emphasis on butterfly education. Not only is there a large indoor Butterfly House, but there is an outdoor garden which attracts numerous South Dakota species. A large sign gives the 10 basic steps to creating a butterfly garden of your own, and a butterfly nesting house can be easily spotted amongst the tall grasses. An official monarch waystation has been established to provide a place of refuge and renewal as the monarchs migrate through North America; shelter, nectar and milkweeds are available for their benefit.
Some of the South Dakota butterflies that might be spotted here are: monarch, painted lady, mourning cloak, red admiral, yellow and black swallowtails, giant swallowtail, comma, question mark, yellow sulphur, and viceroy.
The Butterfly Garden is right behind the Outdoor Campus building; watch out for the big green frog…he’s keeping his eye out for insects!
