A breath of fresh air awaits the outdoor enthusiasts at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature City located at Stone State Park just north of Sioux City. Almost 5,000 acres are available to explore including hiking trails, river canoeing, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. The nature center spotlights the unique Loess Hills and teaches the importance of stewardship of this fragile ecosystem. The center is handicapped accessible and has two 60-seat classrooms are available for classes, meetings, and other events. A quarter mile trail is also accessible.
The nature center has exhibits on prairie, wetlands and forests, live native fish and reptiles, and a bird viewing area. An outdoor amphitheater is handy for nature programs, and butterfly and wildflower gardens are popular attractions. There are also several geocaches and earthcaches here.
