We know there was a church in AD867, because Archbishop Wulfhere of York, fled to Addingham in 867 when the Vikings attacked York. It is believed that the church is older than that, but the arrival of Wulfhere is the first documented evidence.
This wooden church was replaced by a stone building in 1181. Later the northern aisle was added around 1520 and the round headed windows are in the Tudor style.
The tower was added in 1757 and 6 bells installed in 1759, which are still in use today. Later in 1830, the distinctive clock was added to the tower.
Inside there was an organ, which was installed in 1861, electrified in 1958, and then enhanced with electronic technology in 2000.
When the church hall extension was being built, old Saxon graves from the 9th century were discovered and excavated.
There is still an active congregation after all this time and it looks like the church will continue to be used for many years yet.
