The smallish (60,000 people) town of Chachoengsao, ~60kms to the east of Bangkok, has a surprisingly large and busy train station, located on the western edge of the town (not too far from the bus station).

The train is on the route from the Cambodian border to Bangkok. The station is clearly of some years, but in good order. There seems to be a large amount of freight moving through, with more than a few tracks. The station follows the standard design of Thailand regional town stations. A large parking area at front (replete with tuk tuks, and 'motor bike taxi drivers'), open entranceway, ticketing, then seats and waiting area along the tracks (which folk can walk across). There are a full range of facilities present, including a sizeable restaurant area.

The locals were a little bemused to see a tourist here (this is the Buddhist bible belt—not cosmopolitan Bangkok), the station master and the train station police officer both came over to chat to me, and gave me a free town postcard!

I took a 3rd class train, two hours back to Bangkok, for a total fee of 13 baht (~us40c), economical, but I had to stand the entire way!

* note, as of April 2011, there is a second station in town listed on google maps as Paed Riew (~1km to the east). I was told (but did not have an opportunity to view) that this station has been long decommissioned and even demolished.
