Diz a lenda que teria aqui sido baptizado o primeiro rei de Portugal, Afonso Henriques, o que parece carecer de fundamento, dado o templo datar do século XIII; ainda assim, guarda-se aqui a pretensa pia baptismal que serviu para tal feito.
Na verdade, a Igreja foi mandada construir pela Colegiada de Santa Maria do Castelo, tendo sido sagrada pelo primaz de Braga, Silvestre Godinho, em 1239. Pela sua datação, o românico já não é perfeito, e parece prenunciar em alguns aspectos a ascensão do gótico.
Ao longo do tempo foi caindo em ruínas, estado em que se encontrava em meados do século XIX, quando a Sociedade Martins Sarmento decidiu restaurar a capela, que viria a ser declarada monumento nacional em 16 de Junho de 1910, em simultâneo com os vizinhos Castelo de Guimarães e Paço dos Duques de Bragança, formando assim um complexo de grande importância não só histórica, como também arquitectónica.

Legend has it that here would have been baptized the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, which seems unfounded, since the temple dating from the thirteenth century, yet it keeps up the pretense here that served as baptismal font for this to happen.
In fact, the church was built by the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, was sacred by the primate of Braga, Silvestre Godinho, in 1239. For the dating, the Roman is not perfect, and seems in some ways foreshadowed the rise of the Gothic.
Over time it was falling into ruins, state it was in mid-nineteenth century, when the Martins Sarmento Society decided to restore the chapel, which was to be declared a national monument on June 16, 1910, together with the neighboring Castle Guimarães and Dukes of Bragança, thus forming a complex of great importance not only historical, but also architectural.
