Melgaço is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 238.1 km² and a total population of 9,579 inhabitants (2006).
The municipality is composed of 18 parishes, and is located in the district of Viana do Castelo. It is the northernmost municipality in Portugal.
Its main monument is the castle built in 1170 by order of D. Afonso Henriques, the founder and first king of Portugal.

Melgaço is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Pará. It stands at an altitude of 12 meters. Its population was estimated in 2005 at 25,153 inhabitants, according to the IBGE.
It is located 290 km, in a straight line, from the capital of the state. It borders Portel, Breves, Bagre, Gurupá and Porto de Moz.
