The Biblical Mt. Pisgah was on the Abarim mountain range where Moses gazed out at his first glimpse of the Promised Land. Mt. Pisgah was located east of Jordan. In Deuteronomy 32: 49, God instructs Moses to go to Nebo, the highest peak to see Canaan, the land which had been promised to the Israelites. His instructions were to view it from all directions but not to cross the Jordan River. Moses died soon after seeing the Promised Land, and Joshua became the new leader of the Israelites. (Deuteronomy 34:1-5)
Unlike the Biblical Mt. Pisgah Pisgah, Iowa, population 268, is surrounded by prairie in the Missouri River valley, but it is also in the foothills of the Loess Hills (pronounced “Luss”). West of town is Murray Hill, a 200 foot “peak” in this wind-swept range. From that vantage point one can look in all directions to see the surrounding rich farmland, the Promised Land for the neighboring farmers.
