Philip is the county seat of Haakon County, South Dakota. It is located on US Highway 14 and had a population of 779, as of the 2000 census and a population of 885 as of the 2010 census..

The town is named after James “Scotty” Philip, the ‘man who saved the buffalo”. Philip is the birthplace of one of only three Medal of Honor recipients born in South Dakota, Maj. Gen. Patrick Henry Brady.

Haakon County was named in 1905 after King Haakon VII of Norway. Many of the pioneers in the area were of Scandinavian descent.
