San Francisco is a city with many hilly neighborhoods. There are many hidden stairways that connect hillside neighborhoods. The Bernal Heights neighborhood has about 50 stairways on hills of a 45 degree slope, too steep to construct a street for cars.

The lower block and a half of Franconia Street is suitable for cars. The next block and a half is too steep and turns into a stairway. Posted coordinates are at the mid-block beginning of the stairway. Climb the stairway to Montcalm, cross the street and continue up a zig-zagging stairway to Rutledge at the top (N37 44.741 W122 24.454). This railroad tie staircase has a total elevation gain of almost 60 feet over 121 steps. The grounds surrounding the stairway are lushly planted and there is a handrail in one side. At the top there are sweeping views of the city of San Francisco.

At the top of this hill and just around the corner on Franconia Street is the top of the Miller Memorial Stairway.
