L'édifice New York Life est un édifice à bureaux de Montréal. Inauguré en 1889, il est considéré avec ses huit étages, comme le premier gratte-ciel du Canada1. La façade principale donne sur la place d'Armes et une longue façade secondaire se retrouve sur la rue Saint-Jacques. Il est situé à côté de l'Édifice Aldred, au 511 de la place d'Armes.

La compagnie d’assurance-vie New York Life Insurance fait débuter les travaux de ce prestigieux édifice de bureaux en 1887 dans le cadre de la construction de plusieurs bureaux régionaux en Amérique du Nord. Cet édifice comporte plusieurs nouveautés techniques pour Montréal et le Québec tels des ascenseurs hydrauliques, l’électricité et des réservoirs d’eau pour combattre les incendies. La conception est confiée à la firme d’architectes Babb, Cook & Willard, de New York. Le chantier dure deux ans et se termine au printemps 1889. La compagnie propriétaire fait de cet immeuble son siège social pancanadien, mais n’occupe que les 4e et 8e étages. Elle louera les autres espaces. Présente dans l’immeuble jusqu’aux années 1940, la New York Life vend l'immeuble dès 1909 à la Quebec Bank qui sera elle-même absorbée par la Banque royale du Canada en 1917. La propriété de l’immeuble sera transférée à une entreprise liée à la Banque royale, le Montréal Trust. Elle y sera installée jusqu'en 1963. L’immeuble est rénové dans les années 1980, l’édifice retrouvant ainsi son lustre et l’une de ses clientèles privilégiées du début, les avocats. The New York Life building is an office building in Montreal. The building was opened in 1889, with its eight floors it is considered the first skyscraper in Canada. The main facade overlooks the Place d'Armes and a long front side can be found on rue Saint-Jacques. It is located next to the Aldred Building, at 511 Place d'Armes.

The life insurance company, New York Life Insurance, started construction on this prestigious office building in 1887 as on of several regional offices in North America. This building had several new techniques for Montreal and Quebec such as hydraulic lifts, electricity and water tanks to fight fires. The design was entrusted to the firm of New York architects Babb, Cook & Willard. The construction took two years with completion in the spring 1889. The company had its Canadian headquarters in the building occupying only the 4th through 8th floors. The rest of the building was lease out. New Your Life remained in the building until the 1940s though the sold the building in 1909 to Quebec Bank which was absorbed by the Royal Bank of Canada in 1917. Ownership of the building was transferred Royal Bank, Montreal Trust. The company occupied the building until 1963. The building was renovated in the 1980s regaining its luster and became a preferred location for lawyers. In 2007, two residential units were added to penthouse on the roof.
