The Royal Exhibition Building http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM85Q5
was built to host the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. The
subsequent 1888 Centennial International Exhibition was one of the
largest events staged in Victoria's history.
In 1901 the building hosted the opening of the first Parliament of
Australia. Throughout the 20th century smaller sections and wings of
the building were subject to demolition and fire.
It underwent restoration throughout the 1990s and in 2004 it became the
first building in Australia to be awarded World Heritage status.
It sits adjacent to the Melbourne Museum and is the largest item in
Museum Victoria's collection. Today, the building hosts various small
exhibitions and other events.
