The railroad from Northern Bohemia to Saxony was build in 1880s and was used until the end of WW II when the bridges at the border were heavily damaged.
Since then, the German part of the railroad stayed in use until 1972 and after that it was abandonned. Recently the Holzhau-Neurehefeld part of the railroad was made part of the "Loipe" (Loop) cross-country skiing trail. In summer 2004, the bridges had to be reinforced to allow trail maintenance by the track-making machines.
In summer, the trail is used as a regular hiking trail; in winter it is reserved for cross-country skiers - no foot traffic allowed.
