Hickleton Main Colliery operated from 1892 until it's closure in 1988, and was situated in Thurnscoe. A memorial wheel was
erected and dedicated in 1993. the plaque reads-"
HICKLETON MAIN COLLIERY
1892-1988
This plaque was erected to mark the site of
The former Hickleton Main Colliery
which was opened in 1892 and closed in 1988.
Dedicated by Barnsley Metropolitan
Borough Council and British Coal, it will
remain a memorial to all miners and their
families who suffered hardship and grief
in their pusruit of coal from this mine.
The commemoration ceremony was carried
out by the Mayor of Barnsley,
Councillor Keneth Young
on the 6th. April 1933."
In an adjacent field is a marker which I believe marks
the site of the mine shaft. Unfortunately the plaque is
missing off it.
In the nearby Phoenix Park there is a further memorial
in the form of a large boulder resembling a piece of hewn coal.
The park was once the site of the colliery slag heap.
It is very popular with walkers, families and dog walkers, etc.
Co-ordinates for this memorial are N 53° 32.505 W 001° 18.361
and it is situated on the right hand side of the car park
as you enter. Also further in there is a metal sculpture
showing mining implememnts.
