McDonnell Douglas designed the XF-88 and F-101A models as fighter escorts for the B-36 Peacemaker Strategic Bomber but they lacked the range to perform the task. Subsequent models F-101A and F101C were built, as well as a two seater version called the VooDoo F-101B that was built in 1957 and were used until about 1969, with the last F101B deactivated in April 1971.
