In downtown Annapolis, MD, a beautifully designed memorial park has been developed for honoring the firefighters and EMS crews of the various fire departments throughout Maryland. Along the brick walkway between the Maryland Fire Rescue Services Memorial Statue and the Firefighters Memorial Fountain is a white oak tree planted that is dedicated to Fire Chief J. Donald Mooney, Chairman Emeritus of the Maryland Fire-Rescue Memorial Foundation. According to the plaque, Chief Mooney "led the effort to create a home for our fallen conrades ....".
The plaque reads: " 'So Others May Live'/ This tree stands in tribute to/ Chief J. Donald Mooney/ Chairman Emeritus Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial Fondation/ Just as this tree serves as a sentinal over hallowed ground, so, too, does the memory of Chief Mooney's lifetime of contributions to the Maryland Fire and Rescue Services./ Chief Mooney led the effort to create a home for our fallen conrades and in its creation, made a home for us all./ His legacy shall live on at this memorial park and his presence shall be felt by those who visit seeking comfort and solace./ He is here now - watching over our fallen heros.
