Prior to 1947 Hoover (Boulder) Dam did not have an official name. The original site selected for the dam was in Boulder canyon, leading to the name Boulder Dam being unofficially applied to the project. When the site was moved to Black's Canyon, no one seemed to notice that its name usage should be changed. In a ceremony at the start of construction of the railroad from Las Vegas to the dam site the name "Hoover Dam" was used. For years controversy raged over which was the correct name and both were used interchangeably, by map makers and everyone else. In 1947 an act of Congress finally established the name Hoover Dam for this monumental structure.
