Sacramento's position at the upper end of the Central Valley of California, on the navigable waters of the Sacramento River, and at the western base of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Gold Country, has made it a major player in the transportation needs of the region. Ships can transport goods directly to and from Sacramento without having to shift to other modes in San Francisco. Being the initial western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad gave it direct access to the markets of the East and Midwest. And the discovery of gold nearby at Sutter's Mill made it a central player in supplying the needs of the mining communities.
