Montpelier was an important stopping point on the California/Oregon trail. Having just conquered Big Hill, the longest and steepest grade on the route so far, the travelers were in need of rest and sustenance. Originally named Clover Creek and then Belmont, it finally was named Montpelier by Brigham Young after a city in his native Vermont.

Montpelier seems to take pride in the fact that their bank was held up by Butch Cassidy and his gang, commemorating the occurence with a large historical marker sign.
