Big Piney, like most of its counterparts on the high plains of western Wyoming, is primarily agricultural, cattle ranching being the primary endeavor. These high plains sit atop scattered deposits of oil and natural gas, giving rise to a lot of drilling activity in the area.

Big Piney was the primary location of a 1987 documentary titled "Do You Mean There Are Still Real Cowboys?". And nearby is a box canyon where, over a span of more than 500 years, Native Americans trapped, slaughtered and butchered thousands of American bison.
