This 45 ton
sculpture is made of rebar and wire mesh framework covered in concrete and is one of several done by local artist Kenneth Fox. It depicts an early prospector,
Claude Chana, who discovered gold near Auburn on May 16, 1848. The sculpture is located right at the east-bound Maple Street exit from Interstate 80. A plaque on the base of the sculpture reads:
|
Claude Chana
Adventurer and first fruit
rancher in Placer County.
In 1848 he found gold in
the Auburn Ravine, which led
to the settlement of a mining
camp that later became
Auburn.
