Cut out of grey marble and highly polished this 3m high obelisk forms the top part of the Combined War Memorial set up in Kaikoura to commemorate the fallen of the 'County of Kaikoura'. There are fallen remembered here from seven conflicts since and including the South African War of 1899-1902.

The obelisk is mounted on top of a footed and corniced block of grey marble which contains the main memorial inscription and the names of the fallen of both WWI and WWII. This in turn is mounted on a four-step plinth of polished white marble which has brass plaques commemorating the four recent conflicts of Korea, Malaya, Borneo, and South Vietnam. No names are given of fallen in these theatres of war. The whole is set around with grey pavings.
