How about this for a great view-point.
Although it was reputed to have been a lookout for whales in the C19 the views seaward aren't all that good due to the large water tank/reservoir constructed just to the SE of the viewing platform and the generally rising ground in that direction. The intended views are towards the Coastal range to the north and west of Kaikoura. There are also good views of Kaikoura itself, especially the southern end, whilst some parts of South Bay are visible, mainly to the south of the racecourse along the coast by SH1.
Reached by going south out of Kaikoura along SH1 the turning left onto Scarborough St. A sharp right-hand turn and up a steep incline will bring you to a flat area with benches and a recycle facility. The 'scope is at the western rim of the flat area.
