In the UK it is traditional for pubs to have pictorial signs depicting their name. This usually takes the form of a painted board hanging at 90 degrees to the pub wall.

In this case the sign takes the form of painted tiles directly on the pub wall and is more ornate than most.

The picture depicts the long legged birds called cranes. However York has many narrow alleyways and lanes and supposedly the name of the pub originally referred to 3 narrow lifting cranes down the nearby Three Cranes Lane.

I’m sure the birds create a much more attractive sign than lifting cranes.
