Thomas Brent Smith was a well known local figure in and around Kaikoura who was lost at sea whilst trying to rescue a hump backed whale off South Bay, Kaikoura.
The wording on the commemorative plaque reads:
In Remembrance of
THOMAS BRENT SMITH
Tragically killed while saving a whale
16/6/2003 Aged 38 years
Sail on 'Captain Tom' of the 'Bounty'
Your ship has come to carry you home
You meant so much to so many
and will never be forgotten
Eternal love from your parents,
sisters and their families.
The dial is inscribed with the eight cardinal points, the phrase:
Be as True to Each Other as the Dial is to the Sun.
The marked hours are from 0500 to 1900, and at the time of my visit was showing 1000, NZ Summertime, within a few minutes of the correct time.
