The Root River State Trail was created from 42.3 miles of abanonded rail bed. It runs from the town of Fountian through Lanesboro and eastward to Houston, Minnesota. It is used year around for biking, hiking and cross country skiing. This reconstructed depot now serves as the Lanesboro Visitor Center, Minnesota DNR Trail Head Office, public meeting room and public restrooms.
