This primitive Roman construction was built between the years 1059 and 1102. All that remains of the original construction are two small chapels below the main altar, the mail entrance door and the four fortified arches. During the Philippine Dynasty, two exterior towers were built to the monastery.
In 1770 with the arrival of José de Santo António Vilaça, the interior of the church was renovated along with a new main altar made of a zinc-rich rock. The monastery became abandoned and pillaged after the end of Benedictine Religious Order in 1834 and a significant part of the altar and other rocks were used for other projects within the region.
Since 1910, the monastery has been considered a National Monument.
