The Marquis of Granby, or John Manners, 1721-1770, was a Colonel in the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards by the age of 37 although this was probably politically motivated. He had a career in politics being the Member of Parliament for both Grantham (1741) and Cambridgeshire (1754).
He was popular with his men and at a time when an army pension was not what it is now, he set up many of his retiring soldiers as inn keepers.
