TECHNICAL SERGEANT WILLIAM C. TAIT was born in Scotland on August 27, 1919 to Joseph and Elizabeth Tait. His father had come to America in 1923, and young William and his mother came over the following year. By 1930 a brother, Joseph had been born, the family was renting a home on the corner of Evergreen and Magnolia Avenues in Somerdale NJ, and the elder Tait was working as a timekeeper in a department store.

William Tait had graduated from Haddon Heights High School. He had run track, and participated in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia PA. He worked for a time at the R.M. Hollingshead Corporation plant in Camden NJ. He enlisted into the United States Army some time prior to July, 1940.

Assigned to a bomb disposal unit, he was died on July 9, 1944 in Normandy when a mine he was attempting to defuse exploded, killing him.

ELECTRICIANS MATE THIRD CLASS WILLIAM A. RAWS was born in 1918 in Pennsylvania to Alfred & Grace Raws. He was the second son, coming after brother Alfred. By 1930 the family owned a home on Washington avenue in Somerdale NJ. The elder Raws worked as a sheet metal mechanic in a metal shop.

William Raws was killed in action in the fighting off the coast of Sicily on July 16, 1943.



About the Building

The post is housed in a pleasant brick building on a large lot surrounded by homes. It is sort of excluded, located at the end of a street. Through various projects the post members the community, veterans, hospital and the Post home. The Raws-Tait VFW Post # 7334, Kennedy Boulevard and Somerdale Road, is named in part for William C. Tait who died on July 9, 1944 in Normandy when a mine he was attempting to defuse exploded, killing him and the other part of the name, for William Raws who was killed in action in the fighting off the coast of Sicily on July 16, 1943.
