Many families did not feel safe in York city centre at night because it was considered to be rather dark.
The council looked at many schemes to improve the situation. Part of the solution was to install better light in parts of the city.
However another idea was to install small reflective mosaic plaques in the pavement at interesting points in the city. Because the plaques are reflective they can be searched for at night using torches.
There is a book that can be bought that gives clues to where the plaques can be found. Families can then search for the plaques at night.
This plaque is next to the 1900th Anniversary of the founding of York plaque at the fountain outside the York Art Gallery in Exhibition Square. (
