Le cimetière de
Fort Chambly est situé dans
le parc historique national de Fort Chambly. Vous trouverez le cimetière au sud-est de la forteresse faite de pierres carrées, au bord de la rivière Richelieu. Il s'agit d'une zone gazonnée entourée de vieux arbres. Il n'y a pas de pierres tombales, mais seulement deux monuments. Le premier est un monument de pierre pour le général John Thomas. Thomas, né au Massachusetts en 1724, était médecin et devint plus tard général de guerre révolutionnaire. Pendant la guerre de l'Indépendance, il rejoint l'armée assiégeant Québec. Il a brièvement ordonné le retrait du Canada après l'échec de l'invasion par l'armée continentale. Retirés au fort de Chambly, le général John Thomas est mort ici de la variole en 1776. Fort Chambly Cemetery is located within the
Fort Chambly National Historic Park. You will find the cemetery south/east of the square-shaped stone fortress at the edge of the Richelieu River. It is a grassed area surrounded by old trees. There are no gravestones but two monuments. The first monument is a stone memorial for General
John Thomas. Thomas, born in Massachusetts in 1724, was a physician and became later a revolutionary war general. During the American War of Independence he joined the army besieging Quebec. He briefly commanded the withdrawal from Canada after the unsuccessful invasion by the Continental Army. Retreated to Fort Chambly, General John Thomas died here of smallpox in 1776. He and his soldiers were buried here in unmarked graves. The main monument is a big granite stone with a maroon plaque showing the following text.
