This building was originally built for the 2nd Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1879. It became the City Art Gallery in 1892 despite the old signage on the front of the building is now called the York Art Gallery.
The mural on the left hand side of the gallery shows the death of Leanardo Da Vinci. The mural on the right hand side of the gallery shows Michael Angelo and has the legend Michael Angelo shows his statues of Moses.
Both subjects are fitting for a building originally erected for a fine art exhibition.
