The NATIONAL CEMETERY, N. end of National Ave., contains the graves of 3,500 Union soldiers.
The cemetery is closed to new interments except for veterans or eligible family members. Opened in 1867, following the Civil War many of the early burials were reinterments from neighboring battlefield cemeteries in the region. In 1997 the cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
To reach from Tryon Palace proceed north on George St thence northwest on National Ave to the cemetery on the left at 1711 National Ave.
