This sculpture of Kate Sessions by artist Ruth Haywood is at the Laurel Street entrance to San Diego's beautiful Balboa Park.
It depicts San Diego's beloved arborist, horticulurist and landscape architect holding an outreached hand containing a flower blossom. Lying on the ground beside her is a tray holding a few more blossoms.
A plaque near the sculpture reads:
"KATE SESSIONS
1857 - 1940
SCIENTIST, HORTICULUTRIST, NURSERYWOMAN
'MOTHER OF BALBOA PARK'
DURING HER LIFE, KATE SESSIONS CREATED GARDENS AND LANDSCAPES FOR ALL TO ENJOY. IN 1892 SHE BEGAN TRANSFORMING THE SURROUNDING AREA FROM SCRUB COVERED LAND INTO WHAT IS NOW BALBOA PARK. SHE INTRODUCED HUNDREDS OF OUR FAVORITE PLANTS AND TREES. HER VISION CONTINUES TO ENRICH OUR LIVES WITH BEAUTY."
