Mile 1523
Dawson Creek to Fairbanks
The Alaska Highway was built in 1942 in 8 months. The Highway stretches 1422 miles from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction. The Highway was built as a military necessity and followed along a line of existing airfields, winter roads, old Indian trails and rivers. Because most of the early military traffic was bound for Fairbanks, it is often measured to this point. The Fairbanks to Valdez Trail (now the Richardson Highway) began construction in 1899 and was paved in 1957. The Alaska Highway joins the Richardson Highway in Delta Junction and continues to Fairbanks (98 miles).
