This lighthouse began its period of operation on January 15, 1886. On May 18, 1978, for reasons associated with the construction of the new Passenger Terminal in Cacilhas and the lack of usefulness as Aid to Navigation the Lighthouse of Cacilhas was extinguished.
Former Cacilhas Lighthouse, between late 1983 and 2004, replaced the Lighthouse Serreta (Terceira Island - Azores) (partially destroyed by a strong earthquake) and at the request of the municipality of Almada who considered Cacilhas Lighthouse as part of history and cultural heritage of that city council, was on 4 October 2007, signed a protocol with the Navy Department conducive to the recovery of Lighthouses of the metallic structure of the headlamp mounting in place to define and install a lighting system with low intensity, moving into a new "mark of recognition," though no functions Aid to Navigation.
In June 2009, the lighthouse, was deployed on the river wharf Cacilhas, not far from it's original place.
