The legend of the Old Grump tells of the early years in Readlyn’s history about the time the railroads first came through town. One day an old timer jumped off the train and wandered through the city streets. This mysterious fellow had been “riding the rails” since a young man and had covered much of the country, but he was tired and needed a place to settle down. People extended a warm greeting to this newcomer, but his fatigue had etched a frown on his face and he became known as “the Old Grump.” They never knew his name or why he chose Readlyn for his home, but after a year of extending their friendly smiles, his face finally lit up and he laughed for the first time in years. He had discovered what everyone else had known all along: that Readlyn was a great place to live.

This sign is on the north side of town on Hwy 3. Grump Days are held annually in the middle of June, and each year a new “Grump” is crowned.
