Near noon September 19th, this regiment was severely engaged 200 yards east of Lafayette Rd., south east of Brotherton's house.
Sunday, September 20 the regiment was engaged at 10 A.M. on the line where this monument stands, repulsing a prolonged attack, after the withdrawal of the brigade it was ordered soon after sundown to Snodgrass hill were it remain until the Union troops were withdrawn.
Engaged 356; killed 17; wounded 108; missing 12; Total loss 137.

68th Indiana Regiment Monument
A marker with rectangular limestone relief panel on the front depicting a uniformed Civil War soldier against a forest background. The soldier is seen turned to his right, kneeling on his proper right knee. He holds a rifle before him by the barrel, the stock touching the ground. The soldier has a moustache and wears a cap, with pouches attached to his rear waist. Above the relief is a circular, bronze State of Indiana seal. On the rear of the marker is a bronze plaque with a soldier's cap, crossed rifles, and other implements in relief. The marker has a pyramidal cap and is topped with an acorn. It is set upon a short, rectangular, rough-edged base.

Attached to 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio, Moved to Lebanon, Kentucky, August 25; thence to Munfordsville, Kentucky Siege of Munfordsville, Kentucky, September 14-17. Regiment captured September 17. Paroled and sent to Indianapolis, Ind. Reorganized at Indianapolis till December 25. Moved to Louisville, Kentucky, December 26; thence to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, January 1, 1863. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 4th Division, 14th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 14th Army Corps, October, 1863. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to April, 1864. Garrison at Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to November, 1864. 2nd Brigade, 1st Separate Division, District of the Etowah, Dept. of the Cumberland, to June, 1865.
