Wat Chalong is ~5kms to the south of Phuket city. It is considered the leading wat in Phuket, principally due its housing a statue, and artefacts of a famous, local monk, Luang Po Cham. This monk, c. 1875, took action against the influx of Chinese labourers to the island, who worked in the tin mining industry.
The grounds of the wat contain the usual range of Buddhist wat constructs, however, every building is in excellent condition and one might go so far as to say, beautiful. It is a prime tourism spot, and certainly worth a visit if you are on the island, and grow tired of the beaches.
