It seems that every province of Thailand must have a 'Big Buddha', and Phuket is no exception. Still under construction is this large image of the Buddha (more properly known as: Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha), gazing down upon Phuket old town. Though uncompleted it is a busy tourist attraction, both for Thais and for foreigners.
The Buddha is located approximately 10 kms to the south west of the town of Phuket. In size it is 45 metres high, and 25 metres wide. It faces eastwards, looking towards Phuket city. Entry is free, however, there are innumerable opportunities to make a donation or to buy something to help fund the construction of the Big Buddha.
The plan to build a Big Buddha for Phuket developed in the early 2000s, with construction beginning in 2005. The completion date will depend on donations. The budget is us$10 million.
The site is easily reached, along a curvaceous road. There is private and public transport from the town. The road is well sign posted.
One thing to note, if photography is your interest, visit in the morning. At this time the sun shines onto the front of the Buddha, in the afternoon, behind. Morning gives a much better photo.
