This is one of three history signs at this locations.
Marker Name: Food from the Land
Marker Text: Edible Plants of the Northern Paiute People
When we look across these sagebrush covered hills and grassy meadows we see scenic open space. The Northern Paiute People saw something more -- a natural supermarket offering fresh foods in season. WHile the Paiutes’ main source of protein came from game animals such as yellow bellied marmots, ground squirrels, rabbits, salmon, and deer, a variety of edible plants helped round out their diets. Young shoots were sweetest and most tender in early spring and provided a welcome fresh addition when food stores were very low. Fall brought a bounty of fruits, berries, and seeds. These were eaten fresh and dried to store for the winter ahead. Many Northern Paiute People living in this region today still visit lands such as these to harvest edible plants and celebrate their enduring cultural traditions.
