The plaque on the old mill wheel that forms the memorial reads: "Near this site Henry Godfrey of Woodbourne Farm erected his first commercial flour mill. From 1852 until his death in 1868, he was recognised as Marlborough's leading systemic agriculturalist.
"Nearby in 1850, he erected a cob house, and built a wooden house in the early 1860s. The remains of his water-powered mill form this monument."
From 1852 until his death in 1868 in a diphtheria epidemic, Henry managed his land – tilling it, planting crops including copious amounts of wheat, barley and oats, and erecting farm buildings. He was also the first man in Marlborough to put up iron and wire fences.
