There is a theory that pubs called "Man in the Moon", have been names after the biblical story of the man who was seen to be collecting sticks on the Sabbath. As a result the poor man was stoned to death (Numbers 15:32-36). The somewhat obscure link here is that having disobeyed the word of God on a SUNday, he was forever destined to live through MOONday. Hmmm!
No man on the sign? Should this be "The Man in the Pub"? I am told that in the very recent past, this sign used to depict a traditional moon with face with stars in the background. However, since locals refer to the pub as 'The Moon', this sign may simply be a pragmatic move.
