The war memorial was originally erected in remembrance of the first world war and was unveiled in 1924 by the Earl of Derby. It stands outside Bury Parish Church in the old market square.

The memorial is made of Portland Stone and in the centre has a cross. Flanking the cross are 2 panels celebrating those who contributed to the success in the war.

The left hand panel depicts members of 3 armed forces and a nurse. The right hand panel depicts civilian occupations including miners, engineers, carpenters and munition workers.
