Here is some information from the sign:

"Nearly 600 species of plants are found on the island in ten different plant communities. Over 40 are restricted to the Channel Islands, and eight of these occur only on Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz Island Ironwood and the Island Oak are notable examples of island endemics-plants and animals which have either survived or evolved in isolation from the mainland. Over 140 species of land birds have been identified....including the Santa Cruz Island Scrub Jay which is larger and bluer than its mainland relative."

Be sure to read the entire sign, as the information is quite interesting!
