This mousetrap is one of the sculptures on the Irwell Sculpture Trail. One of the largest public art schemes in Britain, this trail follows the River Irwell and is 33 miles long from Salford to Rossendale. It was started in 1997, and is currently being reorganised and updated ready for a relaunch in 2011.

The sculptor of the mousetrap is David Fryer. On the plate where the bait is normally placed is inscribed the words Picnic Area.

This is supposed to be a wry commentary about whether such country parks are a tourist trap and the tourists are lured by picnic areas.

I'm certainly not going to us it as a picnic bench !
