The Putnam Heights Historic District encompasses the 1400-1500 blocks of N. W. 35th and N. W. 37th, the 1400-1600 blocks of N. W. 38th, and the 3600-3900 blocks of N. McKinley. This is an older district than many of the others, with development beginning around statehood in 1907. The developer was Israel Putnam.
There are 104 residences in the district. Primarily, the homes are two-story, and were originally owned by Oklahoma City bankers, merchants, architects, physicians and civic leaders. The quality of this district is the result of the early covenants restricting minimum setbacks, exterior construction and materials, and a building cost between $2,000 and $10,000 - a good price at the turn of the century.
The residences are located on good sized properties with extensive landscaping. The styles range from Colonial, Mediterranean, Georgian, Renaissance and Tudor. The district originally held the Oklahoma Military Institute, later known as the Military Academy, which was located here from 1903 to 1909 when it burned, and was then relocated to Claremore.
The photo gallery shows the wide range of architectural styles in this District. The coordinates shown above are for the residence at 1425 N. W. 37th Street, a Colonial home built in 1906. Another photo shows the residence at 3615 N. McKinley which once served as the Governor's Mansion. This is a Mediterranean style home built in 1911 which has a tile roof and decorative ironwork. A blue spruce in the front yard was given to the 4th governor of Oklahoma, J.B.A. Robertson by the King of Norway, in 1920.
The District was placed on the National Register in 1982 (#82003693).
