This station used to be the main railway station in Bury. It originally opened in 1844, but the current frontage dates from 1954. It used to connect to Bacup and Haslingden in the North and Manchester to the south. The station closed as a main railway station in 1980 when a new Interchange station with a combined bus station opened.
The station re-opened in 1987 as a heritage railway. It is now the end of the line and connects to Rawtenstall. The railway is now a popular tourist attraction, especially when steam trains are used on the line.
