The globe was made of laminated strips of macrocarpa curved into the shape of a ball, with a stainless steel rod through the centre connecting the wooden spokes at the top and bottom. The quarter sections were glued up and then connect them to make full rings. The wooden spokes were joined by a half lap joints and bolted.
The globe is mounted on top of a 2m high column made up of 6 segments of plywood and 2x4, with aluminium sheets glued on the face, trimmed and joined to form the column. The giant globe, 6.5 metres high, 4m in diameter. It is the work of Rare Creations owner Andreas Niemann and woodworker Rodney Lomas. It was a five month project.
The Globe was designed to represent the fragile world we live in. Its intricate structure reflects the complexity of our planet
That fragility is pertinent in Mapua, which has experienced contamination from the former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site.
